VITAL WEEKLY

This is, as far as I understand, some sort of re-issue. It contains pieces from a previous cassette, 'Faerie', a live piece from 2005 and a very recent live recording with Stadlmeier (also known as Emerge) spanning the entire B-side. In total some seventy minutes of music. Rovar17, from Hungary, is a unit of noise, improvisation, sampling, mayhem and sometimes some kind of structure. Usually they (?) have somewhat long and unformed pieces of music in which there is an all freak-out on what I assume to be lo-fi equipment. Sometimes the music is a bit too loud for my taste, such as in 'No Longer Metaphysical Spirit', which doesn't amount to much but a rhythmical excursion as 'Department Of Obstetrics & Incantation - Pent Leditgrant Memorial Hospital', like a
free float swirl of noise 'n rhythm. 'Spinned Out The Thread', the piece with Stadlmeier spanning the entire B-side is the most interesting piece of music, bouncing all over the place, left, right, noise, quiet, introspective and wild. Much of this seems to be taped with a microphones so some saturation is part of this, which doesn't always make this the easiest of listening experiences. It is a most adequate documentation of development. (FdW)

BAD ALCEMY

[BA 100 rbd]

IDWAL FISHER

Is there still room in my life for music such as this? This being Industrial Ambient Noise Dance as made by very competent musicians in Hungary who go under the names ‘MaN’ and ‘Stadlmeier’ and ‘Syporca Whandal’ - these being the collaborators in this release. It would appear that there is, though my appetite is never really a healthy one anymore. At the moment I’m very much an after dark R3 kind of person; shellac discs of obscure folk musics, Jim O’Rourke’s latest and the odd drama should I find myself in the mood. I caught the last half hour of R3’s Through the Night programme on Monday morning as the car warmed ready for the short journey to work, John Shea played Debussy’s first two Preludes and for a few moments there was just me, Debussy, the hum of the car engine and not much else. It reminded me of the story Peel used to tell about him hearing Roy Orbison coming out of a workshop radio while he stood on a train platform waiting for the last train, ‘Only the Lonely’ drifting across the damp winter night air and almost bringing the man to his knees with it.
Needless to say, Csonkolt Tündér [‘Truncated Fairy] didn’t have that effect on me, though I dare say there are people out there who delight in all manner of heavily processed Dance Noise [as that is what I shall call it]. Side one has five tracks and side two one long track that runs to just over the half hour mark. The shorter work on side one bears an uncanny resemblance to the longer work on side two which is [I’m sure you’re pleased to know] a live outing as recorded in Augsburg earlier this year. The title track comes first and is all fast beats and swooping noises like the soundtrack to a Japanese film where all the action takes place inside an upright video arcade game. Second track ‘Violation of the Taboo of the Forbidden Places’ is like a noisy Orb track where the rhythm gets nicked from a rampaging Aphex Twin outing before getting shoved through all kinds of mutations to make it sound like its coming out of your diaphragm. Next track ‘No Longer Metaphysical Spirit’ is moe of the same with the rampaging beats being obliterated by gallons of noise. And on it merrily goes.
I get the feeling that Rovar 17 started out as a Techno outfit until one day they got bored and decided to give Noise a go. Its all very well done and through a decent sound system it will punch its weight but its not Debussy and its not Roy Orbison is it.

THOUGHTS WORDS ACTION

Rovar17 has been pretty much active with constant touring, so he took advantage of modern technologies and has recorded almost every live performance under this moniker. Csonkolt Tündér is actually an expanded maxi-single that has been re-issued in 2018. and it contains additional recordings from some aforementioned live performances. Besides previously released material, this expanded cassette release contains Violation Of The Taboo Of The Forbidden Places, which has been recorded live at The Minimum festival, Kultiplex, Budapest in 2005. and Spinned Out The Thread, which is actually a collaboration with Sascha Stadlmeier (AKA Emerge), recorded live at The Villa, Augsburg sometime in 2018. Rovar17 bursts another serving of industrial noise, which has been gradually pervaded by sampled electronics, grimy ambiance, and gritty drones. This longstanding Hungarian noise act offers what his widely known for, a wide array of sound sources manipulated according to the adequate ambiance, mood, audience, and space he’s performing at. One thing is for certain, Rovar17 properly senses all these elements and combines his performance until he reaches out the complete synergy. These recordings span from subtle radio static, and classic noise experimentations to the much broader aggressive side of harsh noise aesthetics. No matter how calm or abrasive Csonkolt Tündér sessions may appear, these graciously distorted manipulations are gradually pervaded with industrial ambiance, drone soundscapes, sound glitches, and a whole specter of various samples. Csonkolt Tündér provides more than a glimpse into the aesthetics of avant-garde sound art. Quite the contrary, this collection of industrially charged soundscapes delivers an ultimate display into the vast universe of this spectacular art form. This particular material will undoubtfully satisfy a much broader radius of sound art admirers who are certainly looking for much expansive sound. Csonkolt Tündér has been published on cassette by Unsigned, a Hungarian recording label mainly specialized in experimental sound forms, but you can also stream this material at the label’s Bandcamp page.
